AIYF demands more ordinary buses during peak hours in Coimbatore

'The measure will help commuters avoid footboard travel'

All India Youth Federation has urged the State Government to ply more ordinary buses during peak hours and on busy routes to help commuters avoid footboard travel. It has also asked the Government to ply more students-only buses on a few special routes.

The Federation made the demands at its Coimbatore District Committee meeting held a couple of days ago. It said that following the death of four footboard travellers in Chennai recently, the enforcement agencies had started punishing offenders and even levying fine.

During peak hours and in evenings, transport corporations operated only luxury buses, the fares of which are high compared to ordinary buses. Poor students and commuters from middle and lower income groups were affected because of this.

The Government, to prevent footboard travelling, should operate more buses during rush hours and on busy routes. And those buses should charge ordinary fares.

The Federation has also drawn the Central Government’s attention to the plight of students of a textile management institute, who were unable to sit for examinations.

Keeping in mind the students’ condition, the Government must ask the All India Council for Technical Education to intervene in this matter. It had also sought freeze in admission in the next year.

The next resolution, the AIYF passed at the meeting, was for traffic regulation on the road leading to the PSG Hospital. Absence of regulation resulted in slowing of vehicles going to the hospitals.

The Coimbatore City Traffic Police should intervene in the matter, it said and asked the management of a shopping mall in the vicinity to provide parking space for vehicles of those who visit the mall.
