Administration, DPCB warn of action under Biomedical Waste Management Rules against violators

The district administration jointly with the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board has warned of action against violators of the Biomedical Waste Management amended Rules, here in the district.

The Ministry of Environment and Forests and Climate Change on March, 2016 notified the Rules, to apply to all persons, who generate, collect, receive, store, transport, treat, dispose or handle bio medical waste in any form including hospitals, nursing homes, clinics,dispensaries, veterinary institutions, animal houses, pathological laboratories, blood banks, ayush hospitals, clinical establishments, research or educational institutions, health camps, medical or surgical camps, vaccination camps, blood donation camps, first aid rooms of schools, forensic laboratories and research labs.

As per the rules, every occupier or operator handling bio-medical waste irrespective of the quantity shall make an application in Form 11 to the prescribed authority,namely, the State Pollution Control Board and Pollution Control Committee for grant of authorisation.

Against this backdrop, al stake holders in Tamil Nadu are required to apply and obtain contests of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board under the Water (P&P) Act, 1974 and Air (P&CP) Act, 1981 along with the authorisation under the Biomedical Waste Management Rules, 2016.

According to the district Pollution Control Board, non-bedded occupiers shall apply and obtain one time authorisation under the Biomedical Waste Mangement Rules.

The Principal Bench of the National Green Tribunal, in its interim order in July, 2019, directed environmental compensation on those failing to comply with the Bio memdical Waste Management Rules. In compliance, the administration has warned of action against violators.
