According to the police, the assailant approached the home asking for water, when he forcibly took the girls aged 9 and 11 to the terrace of the nearby commercial complex and raped them.

The girls were admitted and treated in the Government Hospital at Pollachi.

The accused was nabbed the next day and was lodged in the Coimbatore Central prison.

Earlier this month, District Collector Archana Patnaik ordered the detention of Veerasamy under Goondas Act for his alleged involvement in eight other cases of waylaying, house break-in and pocket-picking.

“In the 182-page charge sheet the police have relied on statements of 62 witnesses,” public prosecutor of the Mahila Court R. Sarojini said.

She added that the accused was booked under various Sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

“If the charges against the accused are proved, he could attract imprisonment of 10 years or life imprisonment. The case will be numbered as a special case as the victims are minors,” Ms. Sarojini added.
