The staff of the Airport Authority of India (AAI) on Wednesday took a rare challenge to mark National Ayurveda Day. As many as 124 people, AAI staff and those working under contract basis at the airport, planted 1,200 herbal saplings in four minutes.
M. Soundararajan, senior manager (Human Resources) of AII at the airport, said that the challenge was taken out to create a record in National Achievers Book of Records for planting most number of herbal plants in the shortest time.
K. Rajamani, professor and head of the department of Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, and C. Chinnusamy, professor of Agronomy (specialisation in weed control), from the Tamil Nadu Agriculture University launched the drive in the presence of R. Mahalingam, director of the airport.

“The herbal garden was created at 25x25 metre space on the premises of the airport terminal. Our target was to plant 1,000 saplings in five minutes. But the staff could plant 1,200 saplings in four minutes,” said T. Thirumurugan, supervisor (human resources) of AII at the airport. The saplings of tulsi, mint, poonai meesai (Orthosiphon stamineus) and Karpoora Valli (Coleus aromaticus) were among the herbal plants planted in the garden.
The garden will be maintained by the AAI staff and produces from the garden will be used for Ayurvedic remedies.
