Tight security ahead of Classical Tamil Meet

High level security would be in place in and around the city, a week before the World Classical Tamil Conference, starting here from June 23, in view of the presence of the country’s VVIPs, including President Pratibha Patil taking part in the inaugural function.

With Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, his Deputy M.K. Stalin and senior ministers are expected to camp in the city a week before the conference. Security would be tightened at CODISSIA Complex, the venue, and places of their stay, police said.

President, Pratibha Patil, is expected to arrive on June 19 after which she would stay in Udhagamandalamfor two days. She will return to Coimbatore on June 22 and stay at the Circuit House, where a tight security blanket would be thrown, they said.

She would witness the procession of 40 floats displaying the tradition, culture and richness of Tamil and Tamil Nadu from a specially erected stage along with Mr. Karunanidhi and Mr. Stalin and other VIPs, the following evening.

Ms. Patil would participate in the inaugural function at the Complex, where more than 8,000 police personnel would be on security duty.

More than 15,000 police personnel would be on duty from June 17, when Mr. Karunanidhi is expected to arrive, sources said.
