Tamil conference: over 10,000 police personnel to be deployed

Over 10,000 police personnel will be drafted for bandobust-related works and traffic regulation for the ensuing World Classical Tamil Conference scheduled to begin here on June 23, said city Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu.

Talking to reporters here on Thursday, he said there would be a minimum disruption in traffic on Avanashi Road during the procession time alone.

Police personnel from neighbouring districts would be accommodated in marriage halls, schools and colleges. Specialised forces such as Swift Action Force, Rapid Action Force and paramilitary forces such as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) would be in a state of a readiness as stand by.

On the first day of the conference, when the float procession wind its way from VOC Park to CODISSIA Fair complex, i.e., the venue of the conference, there would be a diversion of traffic on Avanashi Road from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the incoming and outgoing traffic would be routed via the parallel arterial road i.e., Tiruchi Road. Normal traffic pattern would be maintained on Avanashi Road, since there would be exclusive routes for the movement of protected persons, VIPs and delegates.

The traffic from Palakkad side would be routed via bypass road.

Special shuttle bus services would be operated for the visitors who can get dropped near CODISSIA. Two officers namely P. Thamaraikannan, Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Vellore Range, would be co-ordinating the traffic arrangements with the assistance of S. Nizamuddin, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic).Three police outposts are being opened for the conference, of which one would be inside the conference venue and two near the CODISSIA fair complex. Anti-Sabotage Teams of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad have taken control of the fair complex. 360 degree speed dome surveillance cameras are being installed in and around the conference venue and had been hooked to the modern police control room.

The workers at the CODISSIA trade fair complex have been issued with an identity card and their antecedents had been verified.

When they return after every days work, they return the cards and are re-issued the next day.

During the procession time vehicles from Airport and those bound for airport would be diverted via Tiruchi road and from Singanallur the traffic could proceed to Airport.

An existing road had been improved for accommodating the increase in traffic to Airport.

Police have also stepped up vigil in and around VOC Park.
