Probe begins in Kodanad estate tea factory issue

Director of Rural Development and Local Administration T. Udayachandran who was recently appointed by the government to enquire into the facts relating to the alleged unauthorised expansion of a tea factory at Kodanad near Kotagiri said the enquiry would be conducted in a phased manner.

Pointing out that the first phase had commenced on Friday, he told reporters here on Saturday that he had questioned officials of various departments like Revenue, Panchayat Development, Town and Country Planning and Geo Tech and recorded their statements. Stating that the statements of the Kodanad Panchayat President and Panchayat officials are also in the process of being recorded, he said he had also perused the records pertaining to the construction.

To a query, Mr. Udayachandran said an inspection of the construction will be carried out at the “appropriate time”.

Earlier he held discussions relating to the matter. Nilgiris Collector Archana Patnaik and the District Revenue Officer S. Kuppuswamy were among those who participated.
