The water tank near Anbu Nagar in Ward 99 of the Coimbatore Corporation is filled with not water but stories of why it has been in disuse. Giving company to the water tank are two more – one in the vicinity and another in Gandhiji Nagar in Ward 98.
Councillor B. Venugopal (Ward 100) says that the tanks have been in disuse since the then Kurichi Municipality constructed them at least five years ago. His counterpart in Ward 98 S.K. Nijaam only agrees.
He says that after the Kurichi Municipality built the tank, it filled Siruvani water – just once. There after it filled it with reasons and explanations but not water.

If the Corporation were to bring back to use the 60,000-litre tank, it will be of great use to not just the Gandhiji Nagar residents but also those in the neighbourhood because they at present get water only once in 12 days, says K. Ravichandran, a resident of the area.
In Ward 100, the tanks, if put to use, will help ease water supply situation in Anbu Nagar, on Auditor Street, Sreenivasa Nagar, Ganeshpuram, Mettur and a few other neighbouring localities, says R.M. Murugesan, president, Rajeswari Nagar Residents’ Welfare Association.
Mr. Venugopal says that the Kurichi Municipality failed to connect the tanks to either Siruvani or Aliyar water supply schemes. In short, they stand as edifices of inaction. Corporation sources say they are seized of the matter after Councillors raised it at the last South Zone meeting a few days ago. They were trying to ascertain if the tanks are part of the Aliyar or Siruvani schemes, whether the inlet and outlet pipes are in place.

Based on the study, they will draw a proposal to put to use the tanks.
M. Perumalsamy, Chairman, South Zone says that he will take the necessary action to bring back to use the tanks.
