Residents of Kalampuzha, Kokkakadu, and its surrounding areas in Gudalur petitioned the District Superintendent of Police, Murali Rambha, and District Collector, P. Sankar, on Tuesday, urging them not to relocate a TASMAC liquor outlet to Kalampuzha.

S. Elango, one of the petitioners, said that there were around 600 families in the area.

There are schools, a community hall, and three Adivasi Colonies located nearby, and most of those who live there are daily wage workers and small merchants, the petition said.

The petitioners include members of Paniyas, a tribal community indigenous to the Nilgiris.

The petitioners claimed that a liquor shop will affect school students, women, and the law and order situation in the area.

They threatened to launch protests if the liquor shop was moved to Kalampuzha.
