The Madras Aluminium Co. Ltd (MALCO) celebrated International Women's Day here recently.
According to a company release, MALCO's Community and Social Responsibility endeavours focus on education, health, and livelihood and women empowerment.
As a part of its social initiatives, it has been underlining the empowerment of rural women, who live around the company. These women are united as one under the self-help groups (SHGs), where the company provides them various skill developments to make them successful micro-enterprises.

After one year of starting this initiative, there are more than 50 SHGs consisting of more than 800 women, with savings of more than Rs. 2,50,00. The company has also provided them with exclusive tailoring centre which trains more than 100 women every year.
Commemorating the company's successful one year at the project and to celebrate the spirit of rural women, MALCO celebrated the “International Women's Day”. There was a rally organised by the company and an NGO Welfare Centre for Women and Children. Members of SHGs, who took part in the procession, highlighted the role of women in development of community. The rally was flagged off by V. Krishnan – Head, MALCO. The rally started from the company gate and ended at JKB Mahal.
Dr. Chandra, Chief Medical Officer – Government Hospital, Mettur, presented the awards for the best three SHGs, three income generation groups and 10 entrepreneurs.
