Government to blame for power crisis: Vaiko

Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko has blamed the State Government for the power crisis experienced in the state.

“The failure in supplying quality power has affected the industrial prowess of clusters like Tirupur, which, in turn, affected the livelihood opportunities of workers dependent on it,” he said.

Mr. Vaiko was speaking at a public meeting organized to celebrate 17th anniversary of the formation of the party here on Thursday night.

No violence

Listing the party's achievements, he said that MDMK was never indulged in any violence, destruction of properties or creating disturbances to communal harmony in the 16 years of its existence.

Justifying the agitations being carried out by the party to protest the dam coming up across Pambar river in Kerala, which feeds water into Amaravathy River, he pointed out that if such a dam was constructed, riparian rights of farmers involved in the cultivation of crops over 80,000 acres in Tirupur, Karur and other nearby districts would be severely affected.

“Besides, efficiency of 49 drinking water schemes functioning along the course of Amaravathy River will decrease,” he added. According to him, it will be indeed a pity if the Kerala Government goes ahead with the dam project.

“They should understand that Tamil Nadu has been supplying 212 MW of power to them through the national grid apart from helping them meet their demands for milk and vegetables, among other essential commodities,” he said.
