Government appreciation for Bannari group

Bannari Amman Group (BAG) has won a Rs. 5 lakh award and certificate from the State Government for its social initiatives.

Deputy Chief Minister M.K. Stalin presented the award in the presence of K. Allaudin, Principal Secretary, Rural Development, to S.V. Balasubramaniam, Chairman of the Group, in Chennai.

A release from BAG said it had aided the construction of 16 check dams with Rs. 34 lakhs.The total cost was Rs. 124 lakhs.

The construction had benefitted 7,000 farmers, who had increased yield by 66 per cent.

In the area of environment protection, the Group had planted trees, improved landscapes, treated sewage using EM (effective micro organism) solution, assisted in solid waste management and constructed a methane gas plant attached to septic tanks. The gas generated was used in community kitchen.

The release also said that it had adopted a Dalit colony for holistic community development by addressing health, hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, education, environment and livelihood needs
