GDMK to field candidates in local body polls

Gandhi Deisya Munnetra Kazhagam (GDMK), a recently floated Tirupur-headquartered political party, is looking at fielding candidates in the coming civic body polls.

In the Assembly elections, the party extended support to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidates but refrained from taking part directly.

The outfit was founded in February this year by K. S. Babuji, a Tirupur-based textile businessman and general secretary of Small cotton shirt and Inner-wear Small Scale Manufacturers Association (SISMA), with the aim of highlighting the grievances of micro and small scale manufacturers across the State.

“Our support to DMK was only for Assembly elections,” Mr. Babuji told

He hinted at the possibilities of fielding candidates for the posts of councillors and heads of various local bodies like corporations, municipalities and town panchayats.

According to him, the party has now 10,000 micro and small scale manufacturers of different products and traders from across the State as members. “Fielding our members as candidates for the posts of panchayat presidents, though the elections to panchayats are apolitical, offers chances of winning in areas such as Puthiamputhur in Thoothukudi district and rural areas of districts like Tirupur and Namakkal where small scale manufacturers are in large numbers”, he said.
