Sankara Eye Centre in association with Rotary Coimbatore Central and Transport Department is conducting a free vision screening for drivers of public transport system to mark the World Sight Day that falls on October 14. The Hindu will be the media partner.
According to R.V. Ramani, Managing Trustee of Sankara Eye Centre, the Deputy Transport Commissioner – Coimbatore Circle, K. N. Uthayanun will inaugurate the camp to be held at Sankara Eye Centre at Sivanandapuram on Sathyamangalam Road.
Collector P. Umanath will preside over the inaugural of the free eye check up camp. The target group would be autorickshaw, taxi, call taxi, bus and truck drivers. The Regional Transport Offices would identify the beneficiaries who required eye screening and send them to avail the benefits of this free eye screening.

Dr. Ramani said that defective vision is a reason for majority of the accidents especially at nights on highways.
Those who drive vehicles should make it a habit to check their eyes once a year. The drivers would be subjected to eye screening and would be given the reports. They could undertake the treatment or could go in for spectacles.
Through such measures, the rate of road accidents could be brought down. The Transport Department is also conducting such measures as part of the road-safety week. In addition, stickers promoting the importance of eye care was also being distributed for affixing them on public transport vehicles.

The organisers plan to launch stickers that could be affixed on vehicles stating that: “I have gone through eye-check up to ensure defect free vision.” Such a sticker would prompt and motivate more motorists to go in for eye screening.
