Consumers seek implementation of biometric registration

The Coimbatore Consumer Cause has appealed to the Registration Department to put to use the equipment purchased in 2010 for biometric data entry.

Secretary of the consumer organisation K. Kathirmathiyon has said in a press release that the scheme aimed at capturing images of land buyers and including their thumb impressions while registering a document. It was launched in one sub-registrar office in the State on a trial basis and was extended to 250 offices, including some in this region, in a month. The equipment needed for the purpose was purchased for all the offices. However, the project has not been implemented.

The sub-registrar offices at Sulur, Gandhipuram, Ganapathy, Joint I and Joint II, Peelamedu, and Vadavalli were identified for the project but it has not been adopted. Since the department has purchased the equipment with public money, these should be put to use, he said. An official of the department told

The Hindu that the biometric system was adopted on a trial basis in just a couple of offices in the State. The department is looking at a new system which is is being tested in four or five centres. Details of extending it to more offices are yet to be known.
