Commotion at CMCH over refusal to accept body

Relatives of the suicide victim and All India Democratic Women’s Association activists alleged that she had resorted to the extreme step owing to harassment by her husband and in-laws.

Tense moments prevailed at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday morning, when members of the All India Democratic Women’s Association and relatives of a suicide victim refused to accept the body.

According to the police, Brinda (26) of Madathukulam died three days ago due to the burns she suffered in a self-immolation bid owing to domestic disharmony.

Brinda was married to Vivekanandan (30), who is employed in Singapore. The couple has an eight-month-old son Roshan. She was staying with her in-laws at Madathukulam, Tirupur district.

Harassment

Relatives of Brinda and activists of Democratic Women’s Association alleged that Brinda had resorted to the extreme decision owing to harassment by her husband and in-laws. They alleged that the victim had left behind a note accusing seven persons including her husband, in-laws Arumugam (75) and Padmavathy (70), and an astrologer, of being responsible for her death.

Talks

The police held talks with the agitators and promised to arrest Vivekanandan and the other accused.
