The best practices that won the PSG College of Technology the ‘best industry-linked institution’ award in the “AICTE-CII Survey of Industry-linked Engineering Institutions” were shared at the 10 edition of the Regional Summit on Quality in Education, here on Saturday.

The two-day summit with the theme “Building a Competitive Institution for Sustainable Growth”, was jointly organised by Coimbatore Zone of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and CII Institute of Quality, Bangalore.

PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore, got the Diamond, College of Engineering, Pune, bagged the Gold, and Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam, got the Silver awards respectively, for the best industry-institute linkages in the first-ever all-India survey conducted by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and CII.
The mechanical branch of PSG Tech bagged the award for the best stream, while P.V. Mohanram, Head of the Department, received the award for the best faculty. Listing out some of the best practices that made the college the national winner among 156 others in the survey, Professor Mohanram said the presence of an industrial institute within the campus, providing services to industries in the form of offering continuing education programmes, testing and consultancy projects, PG diploma in manufacturing technology for industry personnel, besides forging international industry collabor- ations, were some of the highlights. The presence of 25 centres of excellence set up with industry expertise, large number of patents filed, and last but not the least, the active alumni interaction, were some of the other distinguishing factors.
Summing up, principal of the college R. Rudramoorthy said that there was no readymade model available for any institution to adopt to become the best.

“Every institution has its own capabilities, which it should identify and build on to make it strong,” he added.
If an institution was able to have the necessary resources to satisfy the students, then it could be said to qualify as a good institution.
“Faculty and infrastructure are two important resources. Only when faculty are allowed to improve their knowledge acquiring skills can they in turn improve the knowledge of students. Good salary and an environment that provides them freedom to work will help teachers remain loyal to the institution,” he said.
Opportunities
The final point he made to the participating college representatives was that the institution had to go to the industry for tie-ups and not expect the latter to come to the college.
“Colleges should have the right mindset to always be on the lookout for industry opportunities,” Mr. Rudramoorthy said.
