10 acquitted in bomb planting case

A special court on Thursday, acquitted ten members of banned Al-Umma in a case relating to planting of explosives in a building here in 1997.

The prosecution case was that the ten activists had planted bombs in Classic Towers near the Government Hospital on November 29, 1997, during a communal flare up in the city.

Delivering the judgement, Judge, Ganesan, acquitted all the accused, holding that the prosecution failed to prove their involvement in the case.

The city was rocked by serial bomb blasts on February 14, 1998 during the then Lok Sabha election campaign visit of BJP leader L.K. Advani, claiming 60 lives and injuring over 200 people.
