‘Siruvani issue being politicised’

September 01, 2016 12:00 am | Updated September 22, 2016 04:20 pm IST - COIMBATORE:

AIADMK councillors were up on their feet when the DMK councillor S.M. Samy wanted the council to pass a resolution condemning the Centre and Kerala Government for their role in the latter’s move to construct a dam across River Siruvani in Attapady.

At the Corporation council urgent meeting which was convened on Wednesday and lasted for just half-an-hour, Mayor P. Rajkumar said that the councillor could take up the issue in the next council meeting, which would be an ordinary session and not now as it was an urgent meeting where discussions and debates should revolve only around the resolutions tabled for discussion.

Mr. Samy said that the issue directly concerned the Coimbatore corporation as it drew water from the dam for meeting the drinking water needs of a part of the city. As he was about to continue, Town Planning Committee Chairperson K.N. Senthilkumar accused Mr. Samy of trying to politicise the issue.Mr. Samy asked the Mayor what steps the corporation or the State Government had taken to ask the Kerala Government to desilt the Siruvani reservoir.

And as he tried to continue to speak, Mr. Senthilkumar raised his voice saying that the AIADMK government would do all it could to protect Tamil Nadu’s interest. Soon thereafter the Mayor declared the council meeting concluded.

Later speaking to reporters outside the council hall, Mr. Samy said that the AIADMK councillors were keen on stifling his voice than passing a resolution condemning the Central and Kerala governments.
