An Italian vessel on Sunday arrived at Syria’s Tartous port through Visemar Line, the first sea lane between Syria and Italy, the Syrian daily al-Baath reported on Monday.

The vessel left Venice on May 20 and was received by a number of Syrian and Italian officials at Tartous port.

It is important to establish the sea lane to boost the Syrian agricultural exports to Europe, the report quoted Syrian Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah al-Dardari as saying.

According to Mr. al-Dardari, the sea lane is the outcome of the close Syrian—Italian relationship.

Visemar Line provides a ferry service which links Venice with ports in Egypt and Syria. It will take 68 hours to sail from Venice to Syria.
