Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday said that 12 inmates, including five children in the age group of one-eight, have died due to various ailments in relief camps in the four violence-hit districts of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Dhubri and Bongaigaon, where diarrhoea and dysentery cases have been reported.

Dr. Sarma told journalists that with 2,428 pregnant women and 8,072 children below the age of two taking shelter in these camps, providing healthcare to the inmates had become a challenge.

Altogether 117 doctors, including 30 doctors deputed by the Centre, were treating the inmates.
