Need of the hour

September 19, 2012 02:16 am | Updated 02:16 am IST

The report on the World Conference on International Telecommunications in which 193 countries will meet in Dubai to vote on proposals for the use of the Internet (Sept. 17) was interesting. A fresh look at the International Telecommunication Regulations has been long overdue. The last time they were reviewed the Internet had not begun permeating Indian households. When all other forms of media are subject to active gate-keeping, the gates of the Internet remain open.

People publish and receive any sort of information on their mobile phones. What level of regulatory measures are needed is another question but revisiting this area is definitely the need of the hour.
