Watch out!

You know what’s redundant today? Not vinyl records, retail stores or even bookstores, which are getting dangerously extinct in some parts of the world. Watches. Think about it. When did you last check the time on a watch, replace the faded leather strap or restore the dial itself?

With Apple’s latest announcement — a $17,000 watch — has time run out for the wristwatch? While reports say that the watch feels expensive, in reality it’s  actually  expensive. For a watch. Of course, luxury watches are a segment unto themselves but they’re only as functional as a toaster. However, they look so much better than jewellery sometimes.

Edition, the latest addition to the ridiculously expensive Apple family, will come in three variants: starting at $10,000 for an 18-carat gold watch that perhaps will only make Indian mothers happy as it’s another way of investing in gold for your upcoming wedding. Also, are there loans, with a minimal rate of interest that a consumer can avail while purchasing this watch? (Psst, China’s black market has already started selling cheap knockoffs, in case you’re interested.)

So apart from telling you the time of the day, Edition will also let you make and receive calls, monitor your heart rate, open your garage door and even let you choose a PIN number that is supposedly effective against thieves but when paired alongside an iPhone, obviously. However, for $17,000, if the watch does get stolen, it’s only fair if one half-expects it to sprout a pair of legs and sprint as fast as Usain Bolt and return. Or perhaps act like a boomerang.

But in other news about Apple, people are really bad at drawing the company’s logo from memory. Maybe this is something that the pricey watch can rectify — by including a Remembrall and a Howler, just in case?
