The demand for electrical energy is ever increasing in the country. Currently over 24 per cent of the total electrical energy generated in India is lost in transmission (around 6 per cent) and distribution (around 18 per cent). During April 2011 – Jan 2012 the power supply shortage was 8.1 per cent, while the peaking shortage was 10.9 per cent.
Clearly, a reduction in aggregate technical and commercial losses would help the system cope better, especially during peak hours. It is possible to bring down the distribution losses to less than 10 per cent with the help of new technologies which will aid in improving monitoring and control in the electrical power distribution sector.
