Vikrant Abraham believes that the nicest feeling in the world is to come home and see the smiling face of a dog. One year after his pet Lassie (whom he adopted from Blue Cross) passed away, he and his family found themselves ready to adopt again. “It was a dull year,” he says of the time between dogs. It all changed when he brought home Ruby from the Chennai Adoption Drive (CAD) after falling in love with the angelic mongrel pup’s photograph on Facebook. He recalls thinking of her as a calm, yet timid puppy, but was surprised when her personality changed in less than a week after coming home. “She’s the most playful dog,” he says, adding that she loves the company of people so much that she sometimes wakes up napping family members just to say hello.
Vikrant’s parents supported his decision to adopt a homeless pet, and when he is asked by people about why he chose to adopt a native breed, he responds — “What difference does it make? A dog is a dog. They are as loving and smart as any other breed.”
Nearly 500 families like that of Vikrant’s have adopted from Chennai Adoption Drive that is holding its 19th such event this Sunday. Says Murali Anand, co-founder of the Drive — “Chennai has opened up to the idea of adopting Indian Mongrels over the last few years and we hope this only grows in the years to come”.

The next Chennai Adoption Drive (CAD) featuring rescued kittens, Indian puppies and a few adult cats and dogs for free adoption, is on Sunday, November 10 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. at 78/1, McNichols Road, Chetpet, Below Chetpet Bridge. All the animals at the event are vaccinated and records will be provided to the new owners. Address and ID proof are mandatory for adoption. Charity calendars for 2014 featuring pictures of this year’s rescued animals will be launched at the event.
