An osteo-arthritis camp will be held in the city on February 12 and 13

The 32 Osteo-Arthritis Camp will be held in the city on February 12 and 13 under the guidance of Dr. Vijay Naik and his team of technicians at Anandavalli Kalyana Mandapam, 40, G. N. Chetty Road, T. Nagar. The pre-registration for appointment will be on a first come, first served basis, on February 10 at the same venue between 9 a.m. and 12 noon. Old patients can come for review on February 12.

Knee pain is common among the elderly. It arises due to wear and tear of the knee joint, injury, overweight, prolonged standing and due to the breakdown of cartilage, a protective cushion that prevents the bones from rubbing against each other. This creates tenderness and swelling and prevents joints from functioning normally. The usual remedy is to take pain killers or undergo total knee replacement surgery.

Dr. Naik, consulting prosthetist and orthotist from the PNR Society for Rehabilitation, Bhavanagar (Gujarat), has developed a polycentric knee brace, an alternative to knee replacement. This weight bearing device transfers the body weight from the anatomical knee joint to the mechanical one, and helps provide support to unstable knee joints and relieves pain. It is a painless, non-invasive alternative and allows one to perform all normal activities from sitting cross-legged to driving a car.
