Some say that rains are the tears of angels. The more practical know that it is condensed water vapour. Be it the work of celestial beings or the whims of Mother Nature, Chennaiites — after being cooked by the harsh, unrelenting summer — agree that the sudden spells of rain provided a much-needed respite.
Children, who innocently sing the popular rhyme, “Rain, Rain Go Away” are silenced by weary adults. While it did not rain heavily enough to give schools and colleges a holiday, it was enough for the roads to vaguely resemble tributaries of a major river. The phenomenon of normal rainfall is rarely seen in Chennai. So the unpredictable cyclonic rainfall and short, but intense, cloudbursts are welcomed with great joy.
The rains transform our streets into Venetian waterways, but bring out the lush, green beauty of the majestic avenue trees that dot the city as long as they have not been uprooted! The rains have arrived to quench the thirst of the city’s parched wells, reservoirs, flora, fauna and its people.
