Movie: Deiva Thirumagal

Seldom does a movie fall short, when made with a good actor playing a simple story with proven Tamil cinema elements and “Deiva Thirumagal” is no exception. Vijay has drawn loads of “inspiration” from the Sean Penn classic “I am Sam” and has added a lot of Kollywood-ism into this movie, and it does work well, unlike the badly made “Mein Aisa Hi Hoon”.

Krishna (Vikram), mentally challenged, comes to lawyers Anuradha (Anushka) and Vinod (Santhanam) in search of his daughter Nila (Baby Sarah). A flashback tells us what Amala Paul, M.S. Baskar and others had to do with Krishna's life. The story is about how Anuradha and Vinod help Krishna and Nila reunite.

Brilliant cinematography; Nirav Shah is easily the soul of the film. The angles and the colour of the picture throughout the movie is illustrious, mainly because it does aid and not intervene with the storytelling; Clearly one of his best works. Initially, Vikram makes you feel he has over done the role, but soon you will sit into the mould of Krishna, and from then you would know why Vikram is “Krishna” and not someone else. The gravity of his intentions along with his innocence proves top notch skills. He not only holds the movie, but also your attention, irrespective of whether he makes you laugh or cry. The music and camera move hand in glove throughout. All characters have played their part neatly. Santhanam doesn't let you down, again, and he comes to the rescue at many slow portions where the movie loses grip. Anushka has essayed her role with ease and has been neat throughout. Amala Paul, M.S Baskar, Nasser and Y.Gee.Mahendran have done justice too. G.V Prakash's music is good.
The biggest low of the film is that it is highly predictable. Certain scenes were too filmy to be true and could have very easily been avoided. The last 20 minutes of the film make up for all the flaws and you can expect a lump in your throat at the end of the movie; beautiful climax.
Bottomline: A usual Tamil film of established basics which are highly predictable, but all that comes secondary to Vikram's performance.
