Have we evolved?

April 17, 2013 06:21 pm | Updated 06:22 pm IST

…Not when we cannot accept another’s opinion without thrusting ours on them!

I watch in amusement as yet another war unfolds in front of my eyes. The two parties have been at it for a while now, and their strategies are getting a little repetitive. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not talking about the kind of war that’s fought with weapons. I’m talking about a war of words.

I must say, humankind seems to have progressed — from fighting among religions to fighting for and against religion itself.

It gets even better: most of these wars are fought online. What’s the best way to start one? Make a page on Facebook and say something controversial. You’ll be surprised by the number of responses.

Apparently, a lot of people out there have nothing better to do than to prove to some other person (perhaps one even from a different continent) that God does or doesn’t exist. They go back and forth for so long that you could make popcorn and settle down to watch the entertainment.

Why do we wait for a chance to take offence, grab it when we think it’s arrived, and then blow it up to ridiculous proportions? Doesn’t logic ask us to stop at some time? I guess not, or I wouldn’t be writing this article. Can we really claim to be evolved, if this is how petty we can be? Why is it so hard to just say ‘Okay, that’s cool.’ when someone voices their views? Why must we immediately give them our views, and reason why ours is better? We really need to grow up, because this is getting boring.
