Lure of FIFA

July 01, 2010 09:06 pm | Updated 09:06 pm IST

The FIFA: Ever popular.

While sitting at home on another one of those school nights, I'm sure all of you would have heard your mothers yell, “TV all the time, what is so interesting about TV?” Being in Std.X, I was hardly surprised but nevertheless irritated at my Mom asking me to go study at around 8p.m one night. But my irritation wasn't baseless, I mean come on, it is the FIFA Cup, only once in 4 years; we cannot be pressured because we are in Std.X.

Distracted

But parents can't be blamed either. Of course they could let us watch some football everyday, but owing to the timings and also because of two other big tournaments running alongside (Wimbledon and The Asia Cup) they just cannot see children spending enough time in front of their books, if any time at all.

In such a scenario, who is to be blamed? The students, the wise old parents, or the sports authorities? Well that's a matter of deep debate but for now we can only hope that we students catch up with the sports mania with hopes that parents will understand…if allowed to do so, parents can rest assured knowing that their children will turn back to their routine, ‘sit before the books and at least pretend to read', right after July 11 (Fingers crossed for Brazil to win the Cup and Fed-ex to win the title)
