As Vivek Oberoi's gory “Raktha Charitra” hacks its way through theatres across the country, another young Oberoi waits in the wings to make his debut in the light hearted teenage love story – “Isi Life Mein”. This latest offering from Rajshri Productions, stars debutant actors Akshay Oberoi and Sandeepa Dhar, with first time director Vidhi Kasliwal holding the directorial reins. In what seems to be a departure from its traditional formula, Rajshri Productions favours a modern youthful outlook in “Isi Life Mein”, slated for release shortly. In this interview, NXg catches up with the eloquent, quick-footed Akshay Oberoi in a revealing question – answer session.
Tell us about your background. When did you realise you wanted to be an actor?
I've wanted to be an actor for as long as I can remember. When I was a child, I used to tell my parents about my dreams. Thankfully, they've given me a lot of support and were rooting for me since day one. In pursuit of my artistic dream, I travelled abroad to the United States to study theatre. I studied at John Hopkins and received a B.A in theatre arts. After that I spent time in Los Angeles working in play houses, honing my skill and testing my talent. I would say that theatre was a training ground for me, before my break into the film industry.

I struggled a lot in Mumbai in the recent years. It was a hectic time for me, meeting directors, knocking on doors, looking for opportunities. Eventually I met Sooraj Bharjatya who introduced me to his niece Vidhi Kasliwal. We spoke, and they asked me to audition for a role. I was given a scene from an old Hindi movie, which I read out to them. Vidhi was impressed and asked me to play a role in her first movie.

As a matter of fact I relate a lot to Vivaan. It feels like the character was tailored around me— Made just for me. We're both passionate, the way we think is similar, we're both associated with theatre (he being the chairperson of the theatre club in his college). He's non jsudgmental, open minded and unafraid to follow his dreams. In the movie Vivaan doesn't get along with his father, who wants him to study and doesn't agree with his dreams of being a theatre actor. As a sensitive guy who understands human emotion, he is able to help Sandeepa Dhar's character Rajnandini through her journey in the movie. Her father wants her to marry early, but her mother wants her to fulfill her dreams. Vivaan is like her pillar of strength and teaches her the value of faith.
How was it working with Sandeepa Dhar and Vidhi Kasliwal?
Working with Sandeepa and Vidhi was a blast. This film being our first, the amount of energy we put into its making was incredible. We all felt like we have something to prove and everyone wanted to give it their best shot. Everything was fresh and new, we learnt a lot from the experience. We are all good friends now. It's been great.
One thing you like to downplay is your connection with Vivek Oberoi. Why is that?
Firstly I'd like to say is that Vivek is a tremendous actor and I have utmost respect for him. I mean who wouldn't want to use him as a catapult to fame. I watch all his movies on the first day, first show. But the reason I downplay the fact that I am his cousin is because I want to forge my own identity. I don't want to piggyback on him to fame. I believe art is very original and comes from within.
Are you nervous about the film's reception? What are your hopes for it?
Absolutely. I am nervous, and it's only going to heighten as the release date gets nearer. All I hope is that it gets a good reception, as we try to bridge the gap between traditional and modern India through the film. And I hope they like the music, which is the USP of the movie, really.
