Friends since school, Varun and Paloma began deejaying two years back and around same time got an opportunity to do a gig together. “Nothing was planned,” says Paloma. Ever since that first gig, the two — under the name AlgoRhythm — have been playing together and been able to set the dance floor on fire.

With their fresh, eclectic, syncopated beats peppered with some funk, AlgoRhythm calls themselves ‘Bombay’s next door DJs’.

Varun Patra and Paloma Monappa were in town to play at the Off the Record’ at Rowson’s Reserve Smooth Spaces – third edition.

The two young DJs aren’t just musicians by profession. Both as individuals have been pursuing individual interests. And it is no surprise to hear that Paloma is a model as well. “I have been modelling for events and designer friends and I am a stylist myself. Doing gigs is another part of the passion which I have. Same is with Varun. Don’t be surprised if you find Varun’s name on a youth magazine which deal with youth and culture of today,” explains Paloma.

AlgoRhythm’s music and style is about 80’s style retro-funk, breakbot, justice, pretty lights et al.

That’s not all, they also cater for those of you who need something a little grungier to get your feet-tapping and finger-snapping. Paloma who decided to speak on behalf of AlgoRyhtm while Varun chose to do the sound check says the team work pays off as “I open most of the gigs and create the mood and tempo and by the time Varun is ready is to take over, the crowd gets ready to spend the night stomping the dance floor.”

As far as choice of music is concerned Paloma and Varun both play different genres. While Paloma sticks to dance numbers, Varun chooses a wide range of genres for his gig.

But they agree on their music mantra, which is — ‘We like beats high and bass down low.’
