AMU’s Eco Club aims not just to maintain a green, clean campus but also to create green warriors

AMU’s Eco Club

Recently a new club introduced at the General Education Centre of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) began an Eco Fox Marathon aimed at encouraging people to use eco-friendly transportation like bicycles and green fuel-based vehicles for the cause of saving our environment. A creative painting session was also part of the awareness raising event.

While AMU is known as one of the greener campuses in the country, largely due to its lawns and gardens, the idea behind this club is to make people aware of how leading a ‘green’ lifestyle can help the environment. F.S Sherani (Co.Ordinator GEC), said, “ We are working to fulfil the dream of AMU’s V.C. to have a green and clean AMU and to make ecological balance. AMU students must become green warriors across world.”

The club’s objectives include biodiversity, water conservation — through water treatment plant — and energy conservation through measures like LED lights, besides waste management, land use planning, green advertising and resource management, etc. Plans are afoot to set up a recycling unit to reduce wastage of paper.

Drainage and sewer system are other aspects the club will take care of.

Clean-up drives, cyclathons, walks, kite flying competitions, shunning plastic bags, creating wealth from waste projects, plays, slogan writing competitions, debates, poetry writing competitions, elocution competitions are some of the activities planned by the club to raise awareness in a fun manner.
