It’s no longer enough to flaunt just a high-end smartphone. An accompanying phone case is mandatory; and if there is one for each day of the week, the better.

Along with the popularity of smartphones, business opportunists have found a huge market for cell phone cases. What started off as a case designed to protect a phone, the cover has now become a must-have fashion accessory. In fact, most smartphone users are proud owners of multiple cases; in different colours, prints and styles. The options are endless; you can get just about anything you want on a mobile case.

The most popular patterns continue to be Aztec prints and neon coloured cases; what are also catching on are cases that resemble one’s favourite perfume and even cars. Stylistas, also spend hours carefully choosing cases that match their well put together outfits. If for girls, it is funky colours and patterns, for the boys it is all about flaunting their favourite superhero and comic icons on their smartphone cases apart from super bikes and cars.

You can take your pick from the wide variety available on various e-commerce portals and even the countless roadside vendors, whose stock leaves one spoilt for choice. And if you’re an expert at bargaining with vendors, you could bag one for as less as Rs. 80.

While several smartphone enthusiasts use these cases as much for their aesthetic value as their functional purpose, there are others like engineering student Sharath Kumar who has a different take on this. He says, “I don’t really care about the design; I only care about protecting my phone. As long as my purpose is served, any case will do.”

Ankith Menon agrees and says, “Consumer preferences are rapidly changing so buying cases in bulk won’t do any good. Hence, I buy a case and use it till it wears out and wait for a better model.”

Some of the more creative ones have taken this fad a step further by adding their own touch to their cell-phones. Do-it-yourself cases are a nice way of adding a personal touch to your latest mobile accessory. Rishika Nath, who enjoys doodling and designing her own cases, says, “I like doodling on a plain coloured mobile cover and find new ways to make my phone look unique. It is a nice way to express my artistic side and saves me a lot of money.”

Portals like www.likemycase.com allow clients to customise their phone cases based on their preferences and sensibilities. So go ahead, and flaunt your style via your phone.
