This time in Formula One race, if Sebastian Vettel, with the splendid run that he has had this year, doesn’t make a podium finish you can’t blame him. This time round, if all other racers eye the paddock more than the finishing line, you still can’t blame them either. Because, this time, Airtel India Grand Prix 2013 promises to add to the adrenaline rush a shade of glamour, oomph and style with the Grid Girls’ costume designed by Mandira Wirk.
“The costume is designed in such a way that the guidelines given to us are adhered to and the style factor not compromised,” says Mandira who is usually known for her bridal collections and gowns. It has red colour as the base and white for the piping.
The uniforms are inspired by the trendy trench coats and thus reflect the versatility. It is stylish with a lot of detailing work done. “Like, we have used the lapel collar, belt and buttons to give it a sporty look. Also, it is a costume which could be used as an everyday wear or for hangout purposes. It is in line with the trend,” mentions Mandira who insists on the presence of an Indian touch to the outfit.

“We have not kept the costume that short and there are no deep necklines. There is no skin show. In fact, there is no sexiness in it. Rather, it is classy. It has a lot of Indianness. After all, we have our own value system that is very rich,” states the Delhi-based designer adding, “the raw materials and fabric used are taken from India only.”
The uniforms are made of a jersey fabric with a blend of pure cotton and silk to give them a comfy and easy to carry feel. To make them a little more chic, an Airtel logo printed scarf and wedges are added to it. “I would say, it is an amalgamation of the Airtel philosophy and the current trend,” says Mandira.
“The Grid Girls are a very important part of the F1 race. They add a lot of energy and glamour to the sport. Hence, it is essential that they look their best,” adds Mandira who is also preparing for the upcoming fashion season with her bridal range using navratna colours inspired by Jaipur.

Though for now, time is to gear up for skidding wheels, racing heart beats, screeching noise and all the moments when style marries speed.
