Trending sisters Ria and Sonia love designing clothes for the Indian woman

Think western wear and you immediately think black, blue and navvy or grey, right? Wrong. Now, think western and you can think pink, green, brown, yellow and even those with crystals or metals for special effects.

That’s right, Majori, a luxury daywear and eveningwear brand, offers western wear for Indian women and Indian fabric in bright hues. These are specially designed for the urban woman on the move.

They have a range of smart blouses, skirts, trousers and jackets – all priced between Rs. 1,000 and 3,000.

Majori was started by siblings — Ria Joy-Mathews and Sonia Joy-Francis. Sonia, who has a masters distinction in design from Central St Martin’s, London, is the designer. Ria, on the other hand takes care of marketing, PR and business aspect of the brand.

“We always worked together. We started by working with our mother’s brand, Maria Rosa. It dealt with wedding gowns and evening wear. So design came naturally to us and we started Majori. The first outlet was started in Whitefield and this one, in Leela Galleria was started for women from the city to have easy access to our designs,” explains Sonia.

Sonia adds that she loves designing clothes for the Indian woman. “We are made differently. I make only Western clothes. It has an Indian influence only when it comes to colour, fabric and cuts. We believe that the Indian woman will look good in Western wear and our cuts and designs are done in a way to flatter the Indian woman’s curves and suit her lifestyle.”

“What we buy from abroad generally does not work for us,” says Ria and adds that Majori also offers daywear, office wear and evening wear besides party gowns. The clothes are targeted at women between 20 and 50 years of age.

The collection come in coloured themes so there is the navy and pink theme or the green and brown theme among others. Most of their products are hand washed. They also work with cotton, Indian handlooms, chiffons and georgettes and some metals and Swarovski crystals.

Sonia says that she draws inspiration from people. “Just by talking to them and understanding their lifestyles helps me come up with designs for them. I have the talent to convert words into designs,” she beams.

Majori also has wedding gowns created by Maria Rosa on display. This collection offers coloured wedding gowns which they say are popular with non-Christian brides. “These are worn for wedding parties or pre-wedding parties or even receptions.” They also have the traditional white wedding gowns which start at Rs. 19,000, while the bridesmaid gowns start at Rs. 9,000.

Their collection comes in raw silk and have intricate embroidery besides a linen collection.
