Cuts in the jean story

Denim takes ruggedness to new levels. Skinny, straight-cut, slouchy, boyfriend jeans, when ripped perfectly, can all look equally fabulous.

Finding the right pair of ripped denims in terms of cut, colour, and style is one thing. Styling this trend flawlessly is completely another.

Street fashion is all about looking chic effortlessly and this Fall nothing works better than a pair of ripped or distressed denims. Hollywood celebs like Victoria Beckham and Mila Kunis, and closer home, Deepika Padukone and Bipasha Basu, have given this fad its glam quotient. Yet, as careless and casual as they look, the truth is it takes a great deal of care to create that get-up and then flaunt it with élan.

When going in for a pair of distressed jeans, the question you would have to consider is ‘how ripped is too ripped’ because you might not want to do what Kim Kardashian did with her boyfriend jeans which appeared badly distressed, with square cut-outs above the knee exposing large her thighs, slashes at the hip and shredded hems.

If you’re the kind that dares to bare, “go for those boyfriend jeans that come with cuts that expose the knees completely. But if you’re looking to wear this pair through a couple more fashion seasons, go in for subtle cuts and pair these denims with a floral top or an embroidered blouse and of course don’t forget to team them up with some classy heels,” suggests Mukti R, a fashion blogger.

One of the best things about this trend is that you have a variety of silhouettes to choose from. Skinny, straight-cut, slouchy, boyfriend jeans, when ripped perfectly, can all look equally fabulous.

As far as the perfect shade goes, there is a wide variety to choose from. From faded/washed to navy blues, and white to black, and sometimes even the darker shades of grey, everything works as long as they feature the obligatory shreds.

Finding the right pair of ripped denims in terms of cut, colour, and style is one thing. Styling this trend flawlessly is completely another. “For those who rate comfort higher than fashion, cuffed boyfriend jeans are the way to go. They don’t have to be terribly loose and roomy. Bootleg and straight cut jeans are also fabulous options available. You can’t go wrong if you pair these with a solid colour tank top or a sheer button-down. Depending on how slouchy they are opt for sneakers, pointy-toe shoes, or even heels. Don’t forget to carry an oversized bag and wear your favourite pair of gold-rimmed aviators,” says Benita Anna, a stylist.

For the other group that is all about keeping abreast with the changing trends in fashion, Niyati Manoj, a freelance fashion designer, says: “Pastels are trending so you can pair pretty floral tops, crop tops or lace blouses with your distressed denims. Since bomber jackets and sophisticated blazers are back in style, you can throw a fashionable one on too. There are a variety of heels that will go with your outfit- peep toe, ankle strap, gladiator style, etc. Keep your make-up simple and go in for a soft hairstyle, either a side ponytail or a loose French braid.”

While we’ve been talking full-length denims all along, we must inform you that ripped denim shorts are just as hot. Keep your look hassle-free yet stylish.

Don’t forget it takes oodles of confidence to carry off the ripped jeans trend to a T!
