Addressing various facets of conservation

A conference on wildlife conservation in Bangalore later this month will concentrate on wildlife crime, eco tourism, man-animal interactions, and more

Wildlife Conservation and You will host the second edition of their conference, titled WCY 2014, in Bangalore on June 21 and 22.

The two-day, not-for-profit conference will feature eight speaker sessions focused on various facets of conservation, including outreach for conservation, visual media in conservation, marine conservation, wildlife crime, legal frameworks, eco tourism and man-animal interactions.

These will be followed by interactive closed group breakout sessions that will enable participants to learn more on the topics and identify possible areas to contribute.

The second edition features many speakers. Noted conservation scientist, Sanjay Gubbi will give the keynote address. He has been working for protection of wildlife across Karnataka and has been a member of the National Board for Wildlife. Bittu Sahgal, of Sanctuary Asia fame, will speak on his experience of multiple outreach activities for wildlife conservation, from his publications to film productions.

Samir Sinha, IFS, is the CCF and Field Director at Corbett Tiger Reserve.

He will give an overview on the state of wildlife crime, particularly on wildlife trade, in India and the steps taken to tackle this problem. This talk would be aptly complemented by a session on legal frameworks for fighting wildlife crime, by Biswajit Mohanty, a noted conservation activist who has mastered the art of using RTIs and PILs for the cause of wildlife conservation.

Vidya Athreya will concentrate on man-animal conflicts and the need for inclusive conservation, while Krithi Karanth will look at eco-tourism and its role/effects in conservation. Naveen Namboodiri will talk of marine conservation in India and Rita Banerji about conservation film making.
