My hair is turning brown at the ends. Please suggest a remedy.— Sudha

While oiling the hair, apply a little castor oil at the ends. Leave it on overnight and wash the hair the next day. Tie the hair with a scarf if there is too much sun exposure. Ensure adequate protein in your diet by including yogurt, cottage cheese (paneer), beans, dals, sprouts, fish and eggs. However, consult your doctor before making changes in the diet.

Please tell me some home remedies for pimple marks on the face.

Mix rice powder with curd and use it as a facial scrub once or twice a week. Apply it on the face and rub gently on the skin with tiny circular movements, especially on the marks. Leave it on for a few minutes and then wash it off with water. Do not apply on pimples, acne or rash. Mix honey and lemon juice in equal quantities and apply daily on the face. Wash it off after 15 minutes with plain water. Twice a week, apply a face mask. Mix three teaspoons of oatmeal with one teaspoon each of honey, curd and lemon juice, or egg white. Apply it on the face, avoiding the lips and the area around the eyes. Wash it off after half-an-hour.

I have dandruff and have tried used many treatments. When my hair itches, a powdery substance thing falls. Please suggest tell me a remedy.— Pooja

Wash your hair with a mild herbal shampoo three times a week, using less shampoo and rinsing very well with water. Half-an-hour beforeshampoo, apply two tablespoons of vinegar on the scalp, massaging it lightly into the scalp. Once a week, heat olive oil or til oil and apply it on the scalp at night, using cotton wool and rubbing gently to remove flakes. Leave it on overnight. The next morning, apply the juice of a lemon 15 minutes before shampoo. Henna treatments will also help. Include fresh fruits, raw salads, sprouts and yogurt in your daily diet. Drink six to eight glasses of water daily. Add the juice of a lemon to a glass of water and have it first thing in the morning. Ask your doctor to prescribe vitamin and mineral supplements.

I have a problem of chapped lips. Can you suggest me any some natural remedy?— Srikant

The skin of the lips is very thin and delicate. However, after washing the face, when the lips are still wet, you can rub them gently with a soft towel. This helps to remove dead skin. Then apply cream of milk and leave it on for an hour. Apply pure almond oil daily on the lips at night and leave it on overnight. You can also look for a lip balm with sunscreen. You can also ask your doctor if you need vitamin supplements.

Please suggest some way of slimming down below the waist for my friend.— Uma

After consulting your doctor, do the following exercise daily. Lie on your stomach, resting your chin on your hands. Lift up one leg at a time, without raising your waist off the floor. Hold the leg straight. Repeat five times with each leg. You can also learn yoga and practise it daily. Put on dark colours, as they have a slimming effect.

Please suggest which is better for hair removal — shaving or waxing? Also please also suggest a home remedy.— Vaishali

Waxing is the best option for removal of hair from the body. It is best to have it done at a beauty salon. For facial hair, threading and waxing are generally used for different areas. Home remedies do not remove hair. But, they are said to lessen hair growth if used regularly during a period of time. You may try the following remedies for discouraging hair growth.

Make a thick paste of sugar, lemon juice and water and apply it in the direction of hair growth. Wash it off when it dries. Apply it once or twice a week. Apply a paste of turmeric powder and milk and rub this on the skin with a circular motion. It is said to discourage facial hair, but it may leave a slight yellowish colour on the skin.
