A new dance routine characterised by free and highly energetic movement is becoming popular in Bengaluru

Krump your way to health

If you have seen people break into a dance routine that involves a series of jabs, arm swings, chest pops and stomps, do not be taken aback. They are practicing Krumping, a dance routine developed in the United States that is fast garnering popularity in the city. Electronics engineer and dancer Ibrahim Badsha was one of the earliest converts to the dance form. “I started krumping a couple of years ago. I was inspired by the performances of Rangoo a.k.a. Blight, who pioneered the dance form in the city. I was mainly focusing on learning Hip-hop dance. When I attempted krumping at a battle, Rangoo was impressed by my performance. He went on to teach me the basics of krumping.”

He says, “It is a form that is full of energy and ensures that provides an avenue to de-stress. It offers a lot of freedom.” Hip-hop choreographer Velu Kumar is very enthusiastic about the dance form. “It is very energetic. It is part of the hip-hop style and is becoming very popular here. It also works well as a fitness routine.”

IT professional and Fitness enthusiast Rahul a.k.a Big Daddy has been associated with this style for two years now. He points out, “I got interested because it was very different from other dance routines. The chest pops, the arm movements and footwork is unique and makes for a great experience.” Micheal Suraj is a recent convert to the krumping camp. “I started by watching krumping videos on Youtube and loved the aggressive attitude it encompassed. I was hooked and decided to join classes to learn more about it.”

The phenomenon is finding popularity among women as well. Mumbai-based Shrishti Poojary a.k.a Sista Hectik has been krumping for a couple of years and is inspiring many women to take it up. “Krumping has multiple elements that vary in speed and energy.”

(Krumping classes are held at Hip Hop India Dance Co., Koramangala, 8th block on Tuesdays and Sundays.)
