Stage set for Vyuha 2012 inter-college fest at Madurai Medical College

Bored of academics? Want a break? Here’s one of the biggest inter-college cultural fests in town. Starting today is Madurai Medical College’s magnum opus, Vyuha-2012. The festival, organized once in three years, is a complete package of fashion, food and fun for college-goers.

This year’s edition is bigger, with over 30 colleges from all over the state participating in various events. There will be six major performances, 15 minor shows and 20 off-stage events. “We are expecting nearly 500 participants apart from the 300-odd contestants,” says Gautham, cultural secretary for the programme. “It’s a purely cultural event and is a great let-out for college students.”

“It’s the largest college fest in South Tamil Nadu,” says Nazneen, another student. “Apart from culturals, we are organizing a blood donation camp where donors can walk in. The college with the largest contribution will be awarded.” The mega event features competitions in painting, orchestra, vocal performances, medical and general quiz contests, poetry and creative writing. Apart from these, fun events like ‘bride and groom hunt’ and fashion parades will entertain onlookers.

The highlight of Vyuha this year is Tour de World, a dance show that will feature over a dozen varieties of dances from all over the world. “We are encouraging fusion dance and other lesser-known dance forms of different countries,” says Michael Senraj, the student-president.

“Mr. and Miss Vyuha is another event wherein students can show off their fashion sense and stylish outfits. Fashion shows will make the grand finale and there are many eager enquiries.” Budding film-makers may screen their films and documentaries at the short-film contest and photography enthusiasts may exhibit photographs. The theme for the photography contest will be given on the spot this afternoon and the entries will be taken on October 13.

Food lovers can check out Madurai flavours at stalls put up by local joints while shopping freaks will find nice picks at fashion stalls by boutiques based in the city. Shows and contests will begin at 10 a.m. and go on till 8 p.m.
