NEETI SARKAR takes a sneak peek at what’s in and what’s out when it comes to sunglasses

Choose a frame that suits your face the best

You know how graphic tees are a thing of late? A friend picked up one that read: “Sunglasses - Allowing you to stare at people without getting caught. It’s like Facebook but in real life!” There are other reasons to invest in a pair of shades this summer. And, there is a plethora of eye-catching options.

“Spring/Summer 2016 is officially all about oversized frames. By that, we don’t mean large circular frames. Butterfly-shaped sunglasses, square-rimmed ones, and even cat-eye sunnies look best when they are bigger,” says lifestyle blogger, Kritii Grover. She is quick to point out: “Cat-eye sunglasses aren’t as big (size-wise) as we thought they’d be last season. But, this is a perfect time to try out a combination of cat-eye and circular, which are popular on fashion runways this season and they suit most face shapes.”

There are some who are afraid to experiment with new styles and stick to their aviators, which seem to be an all-time favourite. The good news is that they are still very much in fashion. “Aviators give one that ‘star’ look instantly and you have many cool colours doing the rounds. Go for hues of green, yellow, pink, purple or red this summer. Mirrored ones like those worn by Kylie Jenner, Jessica Alba, and Beyoncé, are ruling the roost this summer. But if you prefer calmer colours, opt for blues and browns. They are still quite a rage. As far as the frames go, you can choose between silver and gold but then rimless aviators are becoming popular too. The ombré effect on aviators is the highlight of this style. Also, reflective aviators are a must-have this summer,” says Aliya George, a fashion entrepreneur.

If you are into bling, you’d be happy to know that glittery golden frames are super hip. Fun and futuristic patterns are trending. Enamel flowers, teeny stones, and bold animal prints are some of the most popular styles. Another interesting trend that has caught the fancy of A-list celebs, are the double bridge reflective aviators. They are cool, funky, and can jazz up your casual outfit in a trice. Silver, gold, peach, or pink are your safest and best bet.

Trends apart, your face shape also plays a vital role in determining the style of sunglasses that complements your features. According to stylist Khushi Sanal Kumar, “A round face should be offset with geometric shaped glares. Opt for rectangular frames to give the illusion of a longer face. Cat-eye frames are great to accentuate your otherwise soft facial features. If you’ve got sharper features or a square-shaped face, make sure you go for curvier, rounded frames.”

“If you’ve got an oval shaped face, you’re truly spoilt for choice. While circular, cat-eye, and rectangular shapes work, the oversize trend can be best pulled off by you,” points out designer Karuna Rampal. She adds: “Women with heart-shaped faces must opt for a style with bottom-heavy frames that would complement your jaw line. Aviators would work like a charm.”

Fashion and functionality, we believe, must go hand in hand, so make sure to invest in a pair of sunglasses that are polarised and provide your eyes UV protection.
