Wedding receptions usually result in the collection of a mountain of shiny, gift-wrapped things. The presents can be overwhelming – impractical showpieces, fancy (read frighteningly delicate) crockery and heavy appliances that are impossible to transport especially if there’s overseas relocation involved.
A recent trend has been one in which couples decide to direct their guests’ good intentions towards something truly meaningful – a charitable cause. They simply indicate on the invitations that they have a ‘no gifts’ policy and that if the invitee is particular about bringing something, it could be a cash donation that would go to a charity of the couple’s choice. This strategy helps avoid wasteful expenditure and unusable gifts, and simultaneously raises awareness about the cause.
Everyone wins. The newlyweds get the blessings of guests as well as the recipients of their generosity, the NGO receives a substantial donation that would’ve been difficult to mobilize in regular circumstances and the practice of giving becomes a widespread method of celebration. Other occasions for good deeds include birthdays, wedding anniversaries and death anniversaries, days on which people either make token contributions or visit the non-profit and get involved in the long run. A culture of volunteerism is becoming prevalent in India and personal milestones are marked by a commitment to the less privileged in society.
