Walking to Kadamba Veg Restaurant through the unlit basement parking lot of the Mysore Road Satellite Bus Station can be a frightening experience. However, the airy, spacious and sun-lit restaurant puts you at ease.

The restaurant is always filled with weary and harried travellers stopping for a quick meal. The very reasonably priced menu comprises of everything from kesar bath, dosas and meals to chat, fresh juice, ice-cream and milk shakes.

I ordered the masala dosa, one of the most popular items on the menu. It was accompanied by the usual side of sambar and coconut chutney. The dosa was crisp and the palya was good, but the sambar stole the show! It was spicy and absolutely delicious.

The south Indian meal arrived with the standard rice, papad, sambar, rasam, poriyal and raitha. The rasam, with more than a hint of garlic than is usually used, was to die for! But the raitha, which could not have been more watery, was a bit of a killjoy. The fresh and not too sweet, mosambi juice complemented the meal perfectly.

“My favourite is the gobi Manchurian,” says Ajay, a student. “I usually stop by here on my way home from college.”

The Kadamba Veg restaurant takes pride in serving ‘mamuli' or ordinary south Indian food, as opposed to ‘specials'. As the manager (who wishes to remain unnamed) puts it, “People come here for our quick service and typical south Indian fare.”
