We’ve all longed for the fiery ayira meen kozhambu that grandmother made when we visited her during the summer holidays. Or that ulundu kali sweetened with karupatti that chithappa was an expert at. The crunchy Virudhunagar parotta, the paruthi paal sold in hand-pushed carts…Too bad that in far-off Chennai, good old village food remains a dream for the nostalgic at heart. The Chennai Food Guide hopes to change that through their Farmers Market, that’s to be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. this Sunday.

“Our idea is to bring village food to people who have grown up on them and also give an opportunity to those who’ve not had such food to try them,” says M. Mohamed Ali from Chennai Food Guide. “We’ve planned the event to resemble a vacation in a village.” He explains that visitors can try the various specialties that have been hand-picked from places across Tamil Nadu.

They’ve even invited a parotta master from the village of Koothanallur near Thanjavur to make the famous parottas known to be crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. “Making the parottas is a laborious and time-consuming process,” adds Mohamed.

The Farmers Market will also have a range of exotic fruits and vegetables, homemade spices, podis, pickles, paapad, vadams and paneer; freshly baked organic breads, brownies and buns; and organic food products. Mohamed adds that there is also a small enclosure for farm animals and birds such as ducks and turkeys to which children can feed grains.

Chennai Food Guide’s Farmers Market will be held at Food Consulate, 6, Radhamohan Street, Velachery.
