The Flying Saucer Café disappoints with its wings, but delights with its service

A dish at Flying Saucer Cafe

Epicuria Mall is fast emerging as a food hub. With the USP of being located just below the Nehru Place Metro station, it has plenty of options for commuters to have a quick grab. I was not in a hurry to have my food so I skipped many QSRs on my way and settled for The Flying Saucer Café. Deriving its name from the Greek custom of breaking crockery in celebration, this café is spread over an area of 16,000 sq. ft. Interiors are grungy and modern, with lot of textured wood being used, but for me the lighting was quite dim. Since it’s not a pub, the food should be visible while eating.

Classic minestrone lacked viscosity but the prawn chowder was yummy. It had a very nice aroma of seafood and a smooth, evenly balanced texture. Calamari salad followed my soup and pleased my palate a bit more. Though the calamari was not crispy, it still tasted really good with the veggies. Non-veg mezze platter seemed interesting and had all the required condiments. Lamb kibbeh and shish touk were made to perfection with classic flavour of Moroccan spices. The chicken wings, one of my favourites, however, were a disappointment. I can never understand how chicken with skin can be served cold.

Chicken popcorn seemed to be the perfect finger starter which I kept munching on till my pizza arrived. A nice thin crust loaded with veggies, the pizza was delicious. I felt the menu is dominated by Italian delicacies as the range of risottos and pastas on offer is extensive. Wild mushroom ragu was worth a try. Burger freaks have a perfect 8 oz lamb burger as an option and it’s a delight to have. With the sunny side up, the egg just flows with the bite.

Char grilled sole fillet was one of the best amongst the rest. Served with garlic tossed spinach and a nice olive tomato salsa, the fillet was creamy and tender. Jumbo prawns served with spaghetti lacked in seasoning and flavours. Staff in particular needs a mention as it was good and paid attention to my preferences. The only disheartening section of the menu is the desserts as there are limited options. I had chocolate mousse from the bakery and it was tasty.
