Deli comes to Delhi

Food lovers in the Capital welcomed the fare offered by Indigo’s delicatessen

Mumbai-based chain Indigo which after successfully running six delicatessens has come up with its first in Delhi at Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj.

Though the food industry in Delhi is evolving I still feel there is a serious dearth of good delis. Coming to the rescue is the Mumbai-based chain Indigo which after successfully running six delicatessens has come up with its first in Delhi at Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj.

The brand was launched last month with a buzz in the industry and people bombarded the place due to their sheer love for the food which Chef Jaydeep Mukherjee has to offer. New to the city, the chef never expected that people would come and compare the food with what Indigo offers in Mumbai.

Well without wasting much time I started with the soup of the day which was a chilled melon, buttermilk and mint preparation. Seeing the presentation in a glass and the texture, I would hesitate to accept it as a soup but rather have it as a nice refreshing mocktail, perfect to beat the scorching heat of Delhi. I followed it up with the Delhi House salad which had cured salmon and some prawns replacing the poached lobster. Somehow the salad lacked zing and I found it quite ordinary.

Before moving on to the burgers and sandwiches which I believe are the USP of Indigo deli, I had a bite of Bombay chicken wings and liked every bit of it. The nicely glazed wings had the perfect outer crunch and tender juicy chicken inside. I loved how the brown sugar gave a subtle sweetness to the dish.

Feeling the need to order a portion of garlic bread with the popular wafer thin pizzas of Indigo, Chef Jaydeep suggested a charred garlic cracker. Basically a nice crunchy pizza without any topping, just sprinkled with olive oil and rubbed with garlic, it’s not on the printed menu but one should ask the chef for it, as it’s certainly tasty.

Being a burger lover I always keep it to end my dinner. I tasted two variants — one of course was the beef tenderloin, and the other was a blackened salmon burger. One wouldn’t have expected salmon to act as such a perfect patty for a burger. But it was the tenderloin which made my day. Kudos to the chef for getting the meat done just right to rare medium.

The dessert menu offers some 15-odd options, but the in-house ice cream platter was most delectable. Also worth mentioning is the butter pecan ice cream.
