Sports camp keeps kids busy

It is vacation time and there are a zillion summer camp choices in Bengaluru. Among the many choices, is Tenvic, the sports division of Anil Kumble’s Sports Promotion Group. Tenvic, an acronym for To Ensure Victory, was founded jointly by Kumble and former table tennis player, Vasanth Bharadwaj. Tenvic runs camps in cricket, tennis, basketball, table tennis, chess and sports fitness. It has tied up with several institutions and sports centres in town and offers professional trainers and coaches to run summer camps.

“Tenvic’s vision is to be a catalyst to develop sporting culture,” say Kumble and Bharadwaj.

“We believe it is important to expose every child to a variety of sporting disciplines before we recommend a suitable sport, based on findings from a multi-dimensional assessment we run. We want to make access to training centres a seamless experience for our trainees.”

Tenvic’s training venues include Fortune Sports Academy and PESIT for cricket, Vijayanagar Club, RMV Club and DHL for tennis, Century Club and Woodrose Club for badminton, Tenvic Academy and Woodrose Club for table tennis and Ryan School for football, basketball and chess.

Mentors at Tenvic training centres are certified coaches with loads of experience. Tenvic trainers include big names including former National badminton champion Arvind Bhat and former Ranji cricketer Vijay Bharadwaj.

Each camp offers six hours of training every day. Besides on court and on field exposure, the trainees also have theory sessions and advice on diet and fitness. A regular assessment of trainees is carried out by all coaches.

Tenvic strives to keep the right ratio between trainer and trainees to ensure equal attention for all. The camps now have an overall strength of 500 wards who are taken in after an initial assessment of their aptitude. Tenvic has initiated a talent hunt to spot youngsters with potential and there is a follow up in place in the post camp scenario.

“Summer camps are short-term affairs. It is not an end in itself. We advise and guide our trainees how to enhance their inherent talent in the post camp phase. Thus the camps often become a spring board for a future career in sports,” say Tenvic administrators.
