When it comes to managing stress, the first step is to be able to recognise it. The second is to understand that it is your perception of a situation that determines your experience of it. Here’s how to deal with workplace stress:

Learn to say ‘no’: Contrary to common belief, being assertive is not a personality trait but a learnt skill that can be acquired gradually by making a conscious effort. Reach out and communicate with your bosses so they are aware of the work you’re doing and the difficulties you might be facing.

Prioritise your work: Delegate responsibilities, identify time-wasters and prioritise tasks in terms of importance, not urgency.

Take regular breaks: Stop for five minutes every hour and drink water or juice instead of coffee. Don’t step out for a smoke. Move away from your desk, talk to others. Also take time off from work and plan vacations to relax and spend time with family.

Avoid multitasking: This only adds to stress since you are switching on and off from various tasks thus increasing chances of errors. Focus on a single task and do it well

Give importance to relationships: Investing in and cultivating relationships at work can add to your motivation and help relieve bottled-up emotions. At home, quality time with family is a must. Know when to switch off those smartphones and laptops and maintain clear work-family boundaries.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle: A well-balanced diet with regular timely meals helps keep you physically healthy. Regardless of pressure or deadlines, lunch on your desk while working is not good. A minimum of seven hours of restful sleep will help you feel fresh and rejuvenated. Physical exercise for at least 30 minutes a day is a must. Meditation and deep muscle relaxation may also be useful.

Get some ‘me time‘: Make yourself the priority; do the things you enjoy.
