Students from schools across Karnataka did well at the National Level Spelling Bee Competition organised by MaaRS recently at Thrissur, Kerala. They bagged many prizes in various categories. About 2,000 children from Stds I to Std XII across 22 states of the country participated in the fifth edition of the event.
Winners
Aniket Bhat of St. Joseph's Central School, Vijayanagar and Sivasu. M. S., of CMR National Public School, won the second and third prizes in category II. Hima. M. P., of Sudarshan Vidya Mandir bagged the second prize in category IV. Shreya Sampath Kumar of CMR National Public School received the second prize in category V, while Justin Shawn of Cathedral High School, the third prize in category VI. They had qualified from school level through the interschool and state championships to participate in the national level competition.

The first prize winner in all the categories won a scholarship of Rs. 50,000, the second and third prize winners won scholarships worth Rs. 30,000 and Rs.20,000 respectively. Rank holders from 7{+t}{+h} to 10th also won scholarships worth Rs.5000.
The competition was conceived as a self-motivated learning programme. “It helps students to improve their communication skills and confidence by enriching their vocabulary. The various rounds of the contest assess their spelling, pronunciation and vocabulary skills. The compulsion to excel comes from within, which is the sole intention of this self-motivating programme, focusing on a self-based learning,” said Dinesh Kumar Boswan, Regional Head, MaaRS BrainButton (Karnataka region).
He said that the preliminary screening rounds of the international championship were also conducted at Thrissur.

All those students who qualify from this will participate in the international championship at Abu Dhabi on January 6 and 7, 2012.
